Employment Opportunities at United Way of Freeborn County 

United Way of Freeborn County is a nonprofit organization located in Albert Lea, Minnesota.  Our focus is on the impact areas of Healthy Communities, Financial Security, Youth Opportunity and Community Resiliency.

Introduction:

United Way of Freeborn County has several opportunities for area college students to complete internship hours. In general, this document is written considering the requirements of Riverland Community College’s Human Services-Social Work Associate of Science Degree.

Paid Internship Opportunities:
Interns that complete their 30-hour field experience with United Way of Freeborn County are eligible to be considered for a paid 330-hour field experience as a Food Access Intern. Positions are offered to candidates that exceed expectations and would be subject to the position requirements and budget needs at that time.

Hours of Work: Varies with program opportunities. General hours are listed. We are accustomed to working with various schedules, and we encourage students to communicate any scheduling conflicts to determining if a customized schedule is possible. Interns looking to complete 30-hour field experience may work in different program opportunities.

 

Areas of Program Opportunity:

Food Access Intern:
Food Access Program Interns provide a positive, welcoming experience for our shoppers visiting the United Way Welcome Pantry.
Interns may choose one or more areas of focus for a total of 7-8 shifts (30 hour) October-December. 330-hour interns may be given the opportunity to serve as Pantry Lead, lead or manage volunteers, assist with food ordering, etc.
This position assists staff in providing outreach, direct support, and caseload management for assigned food assistance programs by determining eligibility and enrolling and re-certifying participants in person and over the phone.

General hours:
Wednesdays: 3:30 - 6:30 pm           Thursdays: 11:30 am – 2:30 pm and 3:30 - 6:30 pm

 

Winter Gear Intern for Fall of 2025 
Winter Gear Program Interns assists in the organization and execution of 3-5 community distribution dates of Winter Gear starting in late October to early December. Opportunities are also available for providing program organization: recruiting and managing volunteers, setting up the site, and checking in with area businesses

General Hours: to be determined
 

Jingle Program Intern:
Jingle is a small-scale holiday giving program which matches area donors with families that are referred by human service providers. Interns would assist in the management of accepting applications, answering donor questions and coordinating with area human service providers the gift pick up.

 

If you have:

  • An interest in “Behind the scenes” work
  • An interest in the possibility of hybrid/remote work
  • Strong computer skills with ability to utilize Teams or Zoom
  • An interest in matching written family stories with gifts and/or donors to buy the gifts
  • An understanding that this is not a program with direct client contact and you will not be delivering gifts to the clients
     

This might be the program for you!

General Hours: This is the most flexible of our programs as there are not predetermined hours or set schedule at this time. Upon placement of intern, a customized schedule would be determined. Some hours must be reserved for interaction with UWFC staff, to ensure mentorship & check-ins. The majority of the “behind the scenes work” is generally from November to December 20th.

Community Investment Committee Intern:

Are you interested in the world of grant writing and would like to learn about area non-profit programs? Participate in our Community Investment Committee where you’ll read through grant applications, attend panel presentations, ask questions and place a vote for how the United Way Community Impact Grants should be distributed.

At this time the 2025 Grant Cycle timeline has yet to be established.
