Veterans United

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, the American Legion looked for ways to support their fellow veterans in Freeborn County. They had the passion, the volunteers and the connections. They looked for a partner to assist in the logistics of programming, and found their partner in United Way of Freeborn County.

Veterans United is in development stages, with plans for those affected by COVID-19 and support beyond the pandemic.

To date, the following programming is being developed:

FOOD ACCESS: If you or a Veteran you know is in need of food, UWFC is hosting a "Pop-Up Food Pantry" on Wednesday, May 27th, 2020 from 11:00 am-1:00 p.m. at their office in the north parking lot at 2610 YH Hanson Ave, Albert Lea, MN.

If you are unable to come to the distribution day, American Legion riders will deliver a box of food to your doorstep. Food is provided by Channel One Food Bank and community donations. To request a food delivery, call 507-373-8670.

GROCERY SHOPPING: If you are homebound due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and need assistance in ordering food online, or having someone deliver food for you, American Legion volunteers and UWFC staff can help.

CHORE SERVICES: Are you in need of basic household chores around the home during deployment of an immediate family member? Volunteers are recruited to mow lawns, clean gutters, and help maintain your home.

ACCESS TO BENEFITS: Do you need assistance in filling out  benefit paperwork? Do you need a safe, sanitary place to use a computer, scan paperwork? Peer Veteran Volunteers and United Way staff stand at the ready to help with technology assistance, filling out the paperwork or connecting you to the Veteran's Services Officer via Zoom. Not sure how to use a computer? We can help with that, following safe social distancing guidelines in accordance with CDC and Minnesota Department of Health Recommendations.  Call our office at 507-373-8670 to set up an appointment.

The Department of Human Services and SEMCAC have programs to help with shelter.
